Cartoon music was one part of the influence. There's some more detailed info about this in the liner notes to one of the Elektra albums - either Spillane or The Big Gundown.

As far as I know Raymond Scott and Stallings were the main cartoon composers - but 'Fantasia,' I imagine was an introduction to classical music for a lot of American kids. As a child I had classical recordings in our house - but I imagine that there were many households that didn't have recordings (during the 50's) so, seeing this cartoon was probably an introduction to the 'classics.' And of course Stallings taking or borrowing music from the classical world, etc. - -- Tosh Berman TamTam Books http://www.tamtambooks.com - - ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Feb 2002 08:27:57 -0800 From: Tosh Subject: Bjork I don't have strong feelings about her music either way, but I must say I have seen her in bookshops, and she has to be one of the most beautiful humans on this planet. And to the non-believers out there, I ask whether you've heard her album "Telegram"??? The string arrangements are glorious, and I might point out she did them herself. So in her case, it's not necessary the 'production team' that deserves the credit. Frankly, I'm surprised to hear so many people on this list express dislike for her. She has more of an obvious jazz influence in her sound than most pop stars... Don't get me wrong; I'm certainly not her #1 fan. I only have "Telegram" and the "Joga" remix single, but I've heard much of the other releases. She's a playful musician. That's all. It's not a crime. Does she get less respect 'cause she's rolling in $$$? Why do I get the feeling someone like Iva Bittova, who has a similar spirit but not as much notoriety, would get more credit? Regarding the lumping together of Madonna, PJ Harvey, and Bjork - sounds like someone forgot they these women don't just sing {lalala} over songs their "teams" create. They write, and play instruments, too. Perhaps you feel singers are lesser??? For the record, I will say I'm a HUGE fan of Rob Ellis, who worked on PJ'smost recent album , and others I think:) He is versatile on high. And Nellee Hooper mixed with just about anyone will likely turn out a great song.
