They were pretty good, Zorn played piano, sounding rather like a non-virtuostic Bill Evans (of all things). After playing the suite from Thieves, they played some of the Masada material. The line-up was Dave Douglass- tpt, Greg Cohen -bs, Joey Baron- dm, Zorn- as, pno. This is the same as one of the Masada groups, no? (The Masada material sounded much better on the west coast, however, with Ben Goldberg, Trevor Dunn & Kenny Wolleson.) David says he has a recording of Thieves quartet, is this a bootleg, or a tape from an actual release. If it's a real thing I am sure Patrice Roussel (proussel@ichips.intel.com) will want to hear about it for his discography. shiurba ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- From dshaen@mail.utexas.edu Wed Dec 14 16:56:42 1994 Subject: Re: ZORN DIGEST #6 >> >From dshaen@mail.utexas.edu Tue Dec 13 02:26:53 1994 >> Subject: Thieves Quartet >> >> I have a copy of the soundtrack to Theives Quartet by John Zorn. If someone can list composers which approximates > the feel of "Elegy," I just might get it. Definitely! ELEGY and KRISTALLNACHT are two singularities in Zorn's recent production. They represent his more "contemporary" side. ELEGY is definitely inspired by LE MARTEAU SANS MAITRE, by French composer Pierre Boulez -- one of the masterpieces of serial music (from 1953). ELEGY is also an hommage to Jean Genet's universe. The music is dark, subtle and very complex and is an amazing vehicle in conveying Genet's litterary 's atmosphere. I am very reluctant to music which tries to establish a bridge with other form of artistic expression, not that I deny some successful realizations, but ... music is music, literature is literature, etc :-). ELEGY is not an illustration of Genet's novels/plays, it is more like the musical equivalent of what Genet wrote. At least it the way I feel when listening at it. One of his most intriguing piece. If you are more on the Naked City/Pain Killer side, you might be desappointed, but if you are a true Zorn fanatic, and somebody who likes to keep his ears open to any inovative music, this is a must. Tzadik has the project of reissuing ELEGY next year. They are still some record stores which carry some copies of the Eva pressing (I know at least one :-). > P.S. If you have a catalog number, that would help too. No problem: ELEGY: John Zorn ( 1992 - Eva Records, WWCX 2040 (CD)) Patrice. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ From leon@cpd.ntc.nokia.com Thu Dec 15 05:02:36 1994 Subject: A breakdown of the various Zorn projects...? Hi all, I'm sort of new to Zorn, and tend to get confused by the different projects, and indeed find it hard to identify a given CD (unless it's clearly Naked City, for example). Perhaps someone could outline the different projects, or give a pointer to where this information can be found? Thanks man.
