The Roland TR-808 is a famous drum machine that you have heard many times without knowing what it is, probably. It made appearances in 808 State's 1988 acid house album Newbuild, and the band took their name from it, claiming they were in an "808 state of mind" or state of being or whatever. The 808 was used by a lot of rap artists in the early/mid-80s and produces those big low bwOOOOOOooomm bass kicks you hear & feel from cars going down the street. The sounds in the 808 are all synthesized, and they all fit together really well. Besides the tunable kick, it features hissy hi-hats and short snares. ------------------------------ From: bortz@postoffice.ptd.net (J Bortz) Date: Fri, 12 Jul 1996 14:21:40 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Re: 808 State / Drum Sound I believe that now 808 State has moved up a notch to the Roland TR 909 drum machine. Any opinions ??? 808 STATE, innovators on Britain's dance music scene for almost a decade, are to release a new single 'Azura' on July 29, featuring guest vocals from Louise Rhodes of new drum'n'bass sensations Lamb. The single, taken from the new album 'Don Solaris', will be released as a two-CD set, and features a remix by Dillinja, who collaborated with Goldie on 'Timeless'. The original album version of 'Azura' will be available on the other CD, backed by an 808 State remix of another 'Don Solaris' track 'Joyride', plus a previously unreleased tune 'Goa'. A 12" vinyl club mix of 'Azura' will be backed by a remix of 'Balboa', also from 'Don Solaris', the trio's seventh album. 808 State are hoping the new 'dancier' single will have more impact on the record-buying public than 'Bond', the first single released from the album and which featured the voice of Doughty from US rockers Soul Coughing but failed to chart significantly. Speaking to NME, Graham Massey claimed it was because the single didn't sit easily into preconceptions of the kind of music that 808 State should be releasing and so was ignored by dance music stations and clubs. Darren Partington added: "It was well supported by the (Radio 1) Evening Session, Peelie and Mark Radcliffe, but there simply aren't enough specialist shows in Britain that cross those boundaries. There has to be more of them. But we're standing our ground. We weren't going to have a f--ing house mix just for the sake of it. Where's the quality control in that? You just end up like Sting." 808 State are finalising dates for a UK tour this October and will be playing the Irving Beach festival in west Scotland on Sunday, September 1, their only remaining festival date this summer. -------------------------------- Cheers Roland ------------------------------ From: "Joerg Fitzner" Date: Thu, 18 Jul 1996 13:55:21 -0600 Subject: Re: Holly and Seal on TV On Jul 14, 5:29pm, tob@ramboll.dk wrote: > Subject: Holly and Seal on TV > > [...] > yesterday (13.7.96) Holly Johnson was on the german station TARA2 (I > think its called that). It was one episode of a special show series called "JAM"; and it's the (second or even third) repetition of that episode. It was first aired on "VIVA" (1) around the time "Legendary Children" came out. There is also an episode about Seal. But that includes much less about Trevor Horn - yet it's also very interesting, of course. Further: Last week a Tina Turner JAM had premiere. There was lots of stuff about Trevor in the last segment. Tina spoke in the best regards of him! > They shoved some rarity videos: Across the universe and Legendary > children. Yes, but just excerpts unfortunately. They showed the complete Legendary Children clip following directly after the initial airing on VIVA 1 then. That is "I guess" the newer model that many bands are usuing. At > lease I know 808 is. > > Cheers, Josh Going by equipment lists, it looks like they didn't have an 808 for either EX:EL or Gorgeous. There isn't an equipment list on Utd. State 90 (I don't know about the UK disc with the fish on it) but it doesn't sound to me like they have an 808, just samples, most notably on Ancodia. The 909, however, is all over that record and EX:EL (actually I consider these two records masterpieces of 909 programming, especially EX:EL). The 909 is, by the way, not really an updated 808 but a completely different machine combining analog drum synthesis circuitry for certain sounds (snare, bass, toms, clap, rimshot) with samples for other sounds (all the cymbals). The sound circuits are quite different from those on the 808, with the exception of the clap circuit which is very similar; however the 909's bass drum can be tuned to deliver a long, smooth 'boom' similar to the one on the 808. Someone else mentioned that 808 State did use a TR-808 on Newbuild - I don't have it, nor can I back up this claim, but some other of their early stuff features a CR-78 (or possibly a CR-8000) very prominently, and this machine is listed on the Gorgeous gear list as well. _______________________________________________________________________________ Data > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > data@havoc.gtf.gatech.edu Steve Jobs sums up the Mac-PC wars: "Microsoft has a small problem... no, actually it's a big problem." I asumed that since the first drum machine was called the Roland TR 808 that the 909 was an upgrade from that. Newbuild, I would say, YES! They do use the 808 drum machine because that was there first album as 808 State. They got the name 808 State because of the Roland TR 808 and the state of mind it put them in. Most of the basslines on Newbuild are very fast, almost teckno or acid like. However, The big thing in Newbuild is the Roland TB 303! Its my absolute favorite machine! They use it nonstop in Newbuild. Its very acidy. I believe they used the 303 in parts of Cobra Bora and other songs from the earlier albums. They've seemed to move away from the 303 in the last 2 albums though. I can never get sick of that awsome sound!
