October 20th. That is the date for the American Ztt-ers to wait for. On that date, the ZTT reissue will begin in a full assault. There are many cool things about these reissues, including the first US releases of Propaganda's Wishful Thinking, FGTH - Reload, AON - Who's Afraid with the original (?) UK cover and the original issue of 808 State's 90! And all at a midline price too, around $11.98 list. Here are the details but note that they are not from the actual CDs. In some cases I cut from the discography if they looked the same. Some titles were edited for space to fit on the one-page solicitation. Salt Lake City is the location of xmission.com, that hosts this list, remember, so don't knock it :) I spent 2 weeks in SLC working for XMission, actually, and got a feel for the environment there. It's a bit square, with the religion and all of that, but the geographical isolation has had some interesting effects on the culture. One of the things I found most intriguing was that synth-pop is HUGE in Salt Lake City. Okay, maybe it's not selling out arenas, but the genre apparently never experienced the kind of decline that the genre felt in the rest of the world in the early 90s. I passed through Salt Lake again last month, and my traveling companion remarked that her impression of the city was that it and its inhabitants are "very mild." Putting all this together, it wouldn't surprise me to see FGTH and Propaganda being relatively popular there. The other thing to consider is that Soundscan is probably getting its sales information from distributors and major chain stores when they place their orders, rather than point-of-sale activity. So if Tower, Camelot, Best Buy, Barnes & Noble or any of the other major chains open a new store or simply decide to order a batch of Propaganda CDs for distribution to stores throughout Utah, then that particular week you'll probably see Salt Lake at the top of the list. I am just speculating, though. And that's not to say that register sales don't translate into distributor orders. RIAA certification (e.g. gold & platinum records) is based on units shipped to retailers (which is why they are, for the most part, meaningless, but make great copy for publicity people). 2. soundscan numbers are only estimates as scans are "weighted" (i.e. if an album sells at an indie store (as opposed to a chain like musicland, it may count as more than 1 sale to reflect sales at non-soundscan stores. this is very complicated, so i'll leave it at that. 3. the "index" referred to probably has to do with expected sales based on a market's overall sales ranking in the united states. so, if a title was expected to sell 100,000 units across the country and, say, salt lake city, usually accounts for 1% of an album's sales, it would be expected to sell 1,000 units. if it sold 2,000 units instead, it's INDEX would be 200. similarly, if new york city's sales percentage were 50% and the album sold 50,000 units, it's index would be 100. thus, salt lake city would have a higher INDEX ranking. hope that helps clear things up. - ------------------------------------------------- Once upon a time, there was a little girl who believed that the moon was made of green cheese, that hearts were made of butterscotch, and that someday her prince would come. It is called "Rock Around The Dock - The Wind Of Liverpool". This is a kind of "playback" gig with a stage on water where different artists played two songs. This included FGTH who played "Rage Hard" and "Warriors". This is very fun ! I also noticed two new LDs - Seal - related : 1. Released in June ' 98 (in Europe, I don't know about the US) Best of MTV Unplugged (1&2) - 85 min. including : Seal - " Prayer For The Dying" - acoustic 2. to be released in the US (10 November 1998) Seal - SEAL, 1991 I suppose this is the LD version of the VHS tape released in '91 (as well as a LD but in Japan only, and very very hard to find) Regards Emmanuel Emmanuel Private collection for sale. http://users.skynet.be/goedseel/sumsales.html # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info ztt" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email ztt@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # ZTT discography available at http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?ztt ------------------------------ End of ztt-digest V2 #62 ************************
