They're playing the Metro in Chicago on Monday, October 11th. No opening band is listed on the ticket. The tickets were a reasonable US$15 (before the outrageous TicketDisaster "service" charges). Their web site hasn't been updated since the Lol Creme interview went up (sometime in July), so there's no live info there. Anyone know anything else? What the live show's like (is John Hurt along?), some additional dates maybe? I know someone mentioned them being on the roster for that mega-festival thing in California... I also remember wondering during the VH-1 "Where Are They Now?" segment why Trev was cracking wise about life on the road. I guess now I/we know. For those coming in late, here's a repost of my mail over the weekend: This is what I was able to find... http://www.pollstar.com/tour/an.cgi?Artist=Art+Of+Noise 10/07/99 San Francisco CA Slim's 10/09/99 Indio CA Coachella Valley Music Fest 10/11/99 Chicago IL Metro / Smart Bar 10/12/99 New York NY Irving Plaza 10/13/99 Boston MA Paradise Rock Club ...and with any luck I may be able to extend my stay in Chicago one... more... day... How odd that nearly (save two and the KLF don't count) all my obsessed over bands either have new albums and/or are playing live over a breif six week period. - -paul # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info ztt" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email ztt@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # ZTT discography available at http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?ztt ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Sep 1999 10:51:53 -0700 From: "Ian Ferrell (Exchange)" Subject: (ztt) FGTH Rip-off Artists... I saw a posting a month or so ago about someone seeing a "Frankie Goes To Hollywood" listed on the playlist for a county fair in Florida. Well, this mystery group played Seattle this past Saturday night and my wife, not aware that the band has been dissolved for ten years or so, got tickets to surprise me. Well, she succeeded... The evening started with three intro bands. Two were classic Seattle grunge / alternative and not really what the audience was in a mood to hear. Audience ranged from a high-age of maybe mid-30s down to just-drinking-age (concert was in the Ballard Firehouse bar so you had to be legal to get in). The other band was a New Wave retro band with a very flat lead singer. Ho-hum. When it was time for "Frankie" to appear, I kept waiting for keyboards to appear onstage, but nothing showed up. "Oh dear," I thought, imagining the worst. Band finally appeared and this is what we got: Lead Singer - dead ringer for Paul Shaffer from the David Letterman Show band. Very pudgy and just as annoying. Lead Guitar - some enormous black dude with dreadlocks. Bass Guitar - some youngster who looked about 12. What you'd imaging Corey Haim looks like these days. Drums - another enormous black dude with dreadlocks. That was it. Keyboards were all recorded. Backgrounds all recorded. The band wore ill-fitting silver jumpsuits. Strange claims by the lead singer (who was *not* Holly by any stretch; there's no way someone's voice changes that much in 10 years). 1) Claimed they were the original FGTH. 2) Claimed they have a new album coming out next month. 3) Claimed there have been 27 members of FGTH since inception. 4) Claimed to have been on the original tour to Seattle in 1985. They opened by playing "Welcome to the Pleasuredome." Terrible. Disasterous. I wanted to leave, but decided to stick it out and find out who these guys are. Then segued into "Two Tribes". Destroyed the song. Sounded like he was singing "working for the black guys" instead of "black gas". I started getting pissed. Singer talked for a couple seconds, claiming items above. Switched to "Rage Hard" which was another complete bastardisation. At this point, I was ready to leave and the lead guitarist started playing some song "he wrote" for Hootie and the Blowfish so I ran for the door. There were a bunch of other folks leaving at this point as well. It was appalling. I've contacted the radio station that promoted this shlock to get my money back, and I'm waiting to hear back from their concert manager. Nothing will come of this, but at least I can vent on someone. My question to this alias, aside from my STRONG urging that you boycott these jerks if they come to your hometown, is whether ZTT knows about these guys. They're using the original recordings and lyrics (mostly) and tunes. There has to be some copyright issues with this. I can live with cover bands who do a good job, but these guys pretend to be the original artists and do a really crappy job of it. Very upsetting. ian # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info ztt" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email ztt@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # ZTT discography available at http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?ztt ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Sep 1999 11:34:57 -0700 From: "Ian Ferrell (Exchange)" Subject: RE: (ztt) FGTH Rip-off Artists... We ran a short article in the current issue of Lexicon about this "band." They have no connection to Holly Johnson (who holds the name rights) or ZTT. Funnily enough the one thing the lead singer was probably truthful about was the 27 member thing. When a friend of mine saw them in West Virginia there were 5 people and none sounded like who you mentioned. I guess even out of work session players don't like the idea of getting sued. Hi, Holly has stated previously that he does cae. But it also costs a lot of $$ to go after someone. Even if Holly did go after these guys, and win, I am sure that all that would happen is that Holly would be out of a lot of court fees. We can do our part by alerting promotors and concert venues that these guys are scam artists. - -Dave "Ian Ferrell (Exchange)" wrote: > So the obvious question is whether ZTT / Holly care about these guys roaming > around ripping off their stuff? > > ian > > --- "Dave" wrote: > > Hi, > Sorry Ian that you got stung by this God awful band. It is all there, in Joerg and Lazlo's dicographies. But I hadn't paid attention. Two weeks ago I had gone to my yearly excercise in the Sea Home Guard, and late one night one of my fellow soldiers fetched some of his records in order to play it on the local PC. He had Seal No 1, and I asked him to put it on. It slowly dawned on me that he had a version of this record that was quite different from my own. Some songs were mixed differently, and at least one song was a completely different recording. The cover of the CD seemed, however, to be identical to my own. I have searched the net for more information, and it turns out that I already have the rare original version :-) Now, of course, I have bought my friend's standard "second" version from the nearest record dealer. Does anyone know the story behind the two versions? Best regards, Per M.
