From: av578@lafn.org (James Dawson) Subject: (ztt) New AON on KCRW 3/31 Date: 01 Apr 1999 07:06:22 -0800 (PST) I nearly drove off the road when I heard a new track from AON on KCRW/Los Angeles yesterday -- the song was GREAT! I didn't catch the title, but it had a "narrator" who popped in occasionally to say lines like, "On March 25, 1918, Claude Debussy died in Paris. It was raining," etc., etc. What I liked most is that it sounded like "AON Classic," back when the group had odd samples and such...in other words, the hand of Mr. Horn was very much in evidence. (In fact, I was reminded of "Mine is the last voice you will ever hear.") Hope the rest of the album is similarly retro...if retro's the word... --James Dawson Still Looking for Anne Pigalle's 2nd Album # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info ztt" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email ztt@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # ZTT discography available at http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?ztt ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Henry van Iersel" Subject: (ztt) The new A.O.N. is FANTASTIC!! Date: 01 Apr 1999 22:57:35 +0200 +++ Hi Tumbies, I realise I'm not the first on this list telling you that the latest Art Of Noise album is absolutely great, but: You can clearly hear Anne Dudley's influence is bigger and better than ever. Great job. Further I was afraid that due to JJ's absence, there were not enough "technocratic bites" and fairlighted samples" on this album, but on the contrary: I don't miss JJ (sorry). The narration between the songs, reminds me of Jeff Wayne's - War Of The Worlds. I am looking forward to the accompanying videos from Lol Creme. At the ZTT showcase in London last year, a finished video clip from "Dream On" was shown and it was fabulous. Out now in the US: An advance promo copy cd of "The Seduction Of Claude Debussy". Cat. no. is U3P-1445. It comes in a card sleeve, stickered on the front and back (I hope that the definitive artwork will radically differ from this release: the "mask"-front sticker is dreadful). Release date of the official album is still june 15. The tracklisting and the duration of the songs, is the same as on the cd-r Smiley informed us about. In my opinion, this album is one of the best things ever happened on ZTT...yet.... I also have an official US ZTT / Universal CD-R of the Deam On - release. It contains the same tracks as the promo 12"-es: Wet dream (6:43) / Your Dream Or Mine (8:01) / Day Dream (3:23). It has no generic cat. no. Given the fact that there's also a US promo 12", maybe there's a US promo cd5 around...? After thirteen years of looking, I've finally been lucky enough to score a copy of the Rage Hard box set -- not 12 ZTAX B22 with room for other 12"s but the real deal, "The Total". But it had something unexpected inside -- a second version of 12 ZTAX 22 with a different matrix number. Can someone else on the list who has the set confirm whether there really should be two 12 ZTAX 22s in there? It also came with ZTAX 22 (the 'stamped' 7"), which isn't listed on the front of the box either, and I don't want to list them as part of the set in the discography if they really weren't there when the box was sold. (Maybe someone was storing other parts of their collection in there, and forgot to remove the extra stuff before they sold it.) Oh yeah, the two 12 ZTAX 22 matrix numbers are: 12 ZTA()X 22 A-1U-1-1- 12 ZTA()X 22 A-1U-1-2 ...which kind of implies the same mix. (I can't drop a needle on them at the moment but I can't see any radical differences just eyeballing the grooves.) ps: as a KLF fan I really wish this was Action 23 instead of 22 -- there's a big fat blue Compacta Bold "22" right on the front of the thing; looks almost like a lost Pure Trance 12". :-) -- Lazlo Nibble - lazlo@studio-nibble.com - http://www.studio-nibble.com frankie say revolution is a frame of mind -- # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info ztt" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email ztt@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # ZTT discography available at http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?ztt ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Geoff Davies Subject: Re: (ztt) Date: Fri, 02 Apr 1999 11:34:26 PST Date: 02 Apr 1999 21:44:55 -0800 I also missed it so I emailed Yahoo as to why there was no transcript in the archives. AFAIK (and I was a big FGTH collector when this came out) these were not originally sold as complete sets, the idea was for the collector to assemble the releases as they appeared. I vaguely recall that the pop up sleeve 7" was released a week after the box, which would back this up... I do know that at least one shop held some of the boxes back, 'completed' them themselves and then sold them at a higher price than the individual items... - Andy R. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info ztt" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email ztt@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # ZTT discography available at http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?ztt ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: mazbass Subject: (ztt) 808 State/FGTH/AON rare items up for sale! I still have this discography, printed on ZTT stationery, but even it does not list every item that was actually produced. Most promos are not listed and are often forgotten without all of us pulling together to check and verify rumoured items. On to Ian's last remark about the ZTAB 22 item, I agree that this catalogue number was used for the box set that included all of the Rage Hard releases (2x7", 12"s, CD single). I have in my collection the 12" boxed, 12 ZTAX 22. This is the same box that was used for ZTAB 22 (thus B standing for "box"). I would greatly appreciate if someone had one of these for sale as well as the CD single and Freddie Bastone US 12", please let me know... Also, one thing that is really frustrating and I hope that we can all get together on this, but MINT condition DOES NOT MEAN that there were stickers on an item that have been pulled off and there is sticky residue or torn labels because of the sticker removal (PUBLIC WARNING: PLEASE MAKE A NOTE OF THIS MR. MASCIANA!!!). I hope that we can all agree that MINT means, untouched, unplayed, pristine condition! If we all adhere to these standards it will benefit all involved. There are many Debussy-esque interludes and elements of his music, and there is also narrative bits about debussys' life throughout each track. the album version of 'dreaming in colour' is quite good and very different from the promo mixes. the opening track "il pleure" (many vocal samples of the spoken words:"and it rained") and the 'holy egoism of genius' are each about 8 mins a piece. there are some small 2-ish minute tracks near the end which are more reprisals of themes ("pause" and "approximate mood swing no:2") with a small musical nod to 'moments in love' at the end of 'mood swing'. track 9 "out of this world" is very soft quiet and ambient and you get shaken out of your skin when Rakim very loudly begins track 10 rapping on "metaphor on the floor". he also raps on track 6 "metaforce". the production is beautiful, rich string arrangements on the first 2 tracks (and others), anne's gorgeous piano playing, and the soprano that just wont go away (it seems she's on almost every track). Yes, it seems to be quite silly to put out an advertisement and just hire someone you've worked with before... but not if nobody else responds to the ad. Corporations regularly advertise for positions which are subsequently filled with already in-house staff if an outside person with the appropriate qualifications cannot be found. >3) Since Ian Peel decided to provide as little useful information >possible in his DJ Magazine article (please Ian, don't take this >the wrong way; I don't mean any offense by this, but I do think that a >lot of important questions were left unanswered) , can someone give >any insight as to why J.J. C+C Music Factory also ripped "Moments In Love" for the track "Just a Touch of Love." Also, Chubb Rock has used AON on more than one occasion. (sadly) Markie Mark and the Funky Bunch blatantly ripped "Beat Box" on one of their last popular (if that can ever be truly said) tracks. I'll never forget the stumbling onto the video on MTV late one afternoon. They were using "Beat Box" as a breakdown while slow motion footage was played of everyone jumping into camera frame on a trampoline. I couldn't believe it. I was torn between revulsion and respect for their momentary lapse into good taste. There is some rapper that sounds like the guy who did "Oh Carolina". I wish I could be more specific about him, but, on a track that one of my best friends has, this guy used one bar of "Peter Gunn" as a breakbeat. He used it from Duane's guitar right into that classic drum roll. There was, also, a minimalist industrial group called Kode-IV that used various samples from the whole LP "Who's Afraid" along with "Crazy" by Patsy Kline. As to the J.J. issue, this should clear things up as far as what the man is doing these days. After all he actually wrote it.: > James......... > > Thanks for the mail ! > > There will be a new AoN album soon, but I am no longer participating ! > > I'm enjoying a new life trading futures ! > > Always a pleasure to reply ! > > Cheers > > JJ > As far as the question about the presence of Lol Creme on the album after a publicized search for talent: Just because you worked with someone, doesn't mean that you remember -or know- all of that persons qualifications. Besides, maybe they thought he was too busy doing other stuff to think he would be interested. It's not like Trevor has Lol's number included in his wallet contents "for just such an emergency...". Can someone say looking for new blood? Next up, the interview: do not knock Ian for focusing on the current work. He does not work for VH-1 doing "Where Are They Now" installments. AON's old work -however wonderful- is not relevant to present time. And the present time is what any successful music mag is going to concentrate on. You want history? Don't look for it in a pop culture mag. You wouldn't look for pearls in a stagnant pond, would you? -- James S. Date: 30 Apr 1999 15:04:40 PDT To all of the members: It saddens me a great deal to report that Roger Troutman and Zapp Troutman of the group Zapp have both died. I heard this news on Monday morning, about two weeks after I saw them live at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, CA (about ten minutes form my house). It has been said that this was a murder-suicide; apparently Zapp shot Roger to death and then killed himself. This news is practically unknown since everyone has been talking about the Colorado shootings and the Kosovo war on the news; MTV hasn't mentioned anything about the deaths either. Power 106 FM (KPWR) and KACE FM of Los Angeles did report the news though. For those of you who aren't familiar with the group, they have been one of the BIGGEST influences on rap and R&B music, right behind Kraftwerk,Art of Noise, and James Brown. They have been sampled and imitated to DEATH!!!! Listen to most of the new R&B bullshit on the air and you'll probably agree! The group's signature sound is largely a testament to technology; Roger's vocals were sung through a talk-box which created sort of a "robot funk" sound. Their hits include "More Bounce To The Ounce" , "Blow My Thing" , "Computer Love (not to be confused with the Kraftwerk version)", "I Can Make You Dance", "Dance Floor", "Slow & Easy" , and "California Love (which was done with 2Pac)". I am SO glad that I got to see them before this happened; it was quite a spectacle. They are truly the masters of old school (as probably many g's will attest to), and they will be sorely missed !!!!!!!!!!!!
