Jeff: I have no Mac (and I currently have no net access - hence the free e-mail service (to which I can attach no files)). When I go to Kinko's to use a Mac, I will copy the diskette and mail you a copy, if you like. (My mail to you keeps getting bounced, so I have to do this through the list) Jeff P.S. Time for me to state my wish list of ZTT material for CD. I'd love a multidisc compilation but since that doesn't seem likely (but would be a welcome surprise!) I'd settle for one CD that contains: 1) Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Relax (Sex Mix - 16 minutes. amazing!) 2) 808 State/MC Tunes - Dance Yourself To Death (mix from the License To Thrill soundtrack. amazing!) 3) Grace Jones - Junk Yard (the funkiest ZTT jam of all time. amazing!) 4) Propaganda - Lied (from the Duel double 7") 5) Propaganda - The Lesson (from the Duel double 7") 6) Anne Pigalle - He Stranger (extended) + Stranger (Than Fiction) 7) Propaganda - (beta wraparound of) P:Machinery 8) Propaganda - (echo of ) Frozen Faces 9) Andrew Poppy - The Impossible Net 10) FGTH - WTTP (Fruitness) from XZTAS7. 11) FGHT - Warrior Of The Wasteland (Attack Mix) Hmmm...I think that's about it. These are some of ZTT's finest moments that are not available on CD but should be. There might be a few others I'm forgetting but I can't think of any at the moment. Of course, I'd love to see all of the cassette singles released on CD. I'd also love to have the Nasty Rox Inc. album reissued on CD with the original 12". Oh yeah, and Act's Absolutely Immune and Chance 12" issued on CD too. Thanks for reading! Someone can tell me what > it is? Well, if it is a rising sequence of notes, it's the XDR test tone, and it occurs at the start and/or end of a number of ZTT (and other) tapes that I have. From (distant) memory, XDR stood for eXtended Dynamic Range, and was supposed to be a method of making tapes sound better by checking the sound quality at all stages of manufacturing. The test signal of 10 notes, each an octave apart, was there as a sort of quality check used in the manufacturing process - if the low or high frequencies were lost, some of the notes would not be audible. - andy R. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info ztt" in the message. # Postings must go to ztt@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. # ZTT discography available at http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?ztt ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: rsystem2@juno.com (Jeff A Hamilton) Subject: (ztt) All Saints Date: 03 Feb 1998 17:54:02 -0500 There is a 1/2-lengthy article about this group in the current issue of Billboard. I hope no one takes any offence to this. If anyone should it probably should be me since most of them are about me. I hope you find this as entertaining as it was to write it. *Top 10 Signs That You Are Obsessed With ZTT/Trevor Horn* 10. You have dreams about finding that rare ZTT release you've been looking for since 1985. 9. You have dreams in which you find new ZTT releases that don't exist and then get pissed when you wake up and realize your mind has been playing tricks on you. 8. You love the Buggles so much, you've made your own T-Shirt and proudly were in it public places. 7. You listen to the 2nd Buggles album for the 200th time in the hopes that once you become more familiar with the songs on it you will realize how great it really is. 6. You take pride in the fact that instead of memorizing all of the 10 commandments in religious studies you can recite all of the songs and artists that make up ZTT's Action Series. 5. You considered buying Cher's last album just to get the two Trevor Horn produced tracks. 4. You bought Cher's last album just for that reason. 3. You actually tried to track down and read all of the books that Paul Morley listed in the liner notes of FGTH's WTTP LP. 2. After hearing that Trevor & Seal got into fist-a-cuffs and stopped working together, you start thinking that Seal's second album really isn't as good as you used to think it was. And, the number one sign you are obsessed with ZTT and/or Trevor Horn... 1. You actually spend time out of your busy life to make a top ten list of why you are obsessed with ZTT and Trevor Horn instead of studying for an exam. Thanks folks! Trevor, if you're out there, gimme a call. I want to make a documentary about you! Before I get any hate mail, I just want to say for the record that I do like the Buggles and no, I haven't made a Buggles T-shirt. But most of the others are true. Post other signs... I know there must be more! Lexicon of Love is an old album by ABC, produced by Trevor Horn, with Anne Dudley arranging strings and apparently Gary Langan being involved, too. If you watched MTV back in the day, you probably saw the video for "Poison Arrow" from this album at least a dozen times. IMHO it's a good pop album, but really Euro sounding, lightweight and discoey. It ain't no Welcome to the Pleasuredome. ;) # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info ztt" in the message. # Postings must go to ztt@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. # ZTT discography available at http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?ztt ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Raymond A. Carrying on the "Where are they now" feature on Gary Langan, I believe he also mixed Propaganda's "1234" album. I've also seen a few other minor credits for the elusive Gary on other British pop groups (can't remember their names but they would be 80's sounding). This DJ is very fasinated by Trevor and how he was the first to use sampled break beats to make new music. So he told the story about how Trevor used he's inspiration from working with The Supream Team when he was producing Yes Owner of a Lonely Heart. This is really essential stuff for anyone who is interested in Trevor Horn and how music changed by the use of samplers. That's why I've made a copy of a selected part of the feature for everybody. Check: www.kom.auc.dk/~sorenl/horn.zip (2,5 Mb MP3 sample) Prior to this piece of the feature the DJ has told the story about The Supream Team and how Trevor Horn had bought this new invention called a Fairlight. In this piece it's shown how Trevor sampled three little pieces (limited by the sampler) of a Funk Inc. record and used it on the Yes track. It's very detailed and I think it's splented. The DJ speaks Danish but I think the music speaks for itself. enjoy || #| |# #|@| # |@#||@ || | | || |@ || | || || #| |# #|@| # |@#||@ || | | || |@ || | || || #| |# #|@| # |@#||@ || | | || |@ || | || || #| |# #|@| # |@#||@ || | | || |@ || | || || #| |# #|@| # |@#||@ || | | || |@ || | || || #| || | | || sorenl # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info ztt" in the message. # Postings must go to ztt@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. # ZTT discography available at http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?ztt ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: JohnJrDPD@aol.com Subject: (ztt) ZTT "golden" disc Date: 09 Feb 1998 03:31:53 EST My 2 cents... I can make cassettes with complete packaging and cd packaging but not cds. Is there someone on this list to whom I could forward a DAT master - in turn, that person could make the cds? I'm not sure what prices would end up being, but the "list price" (no pun intended) would be postage + media + packaging. For cassettes, that would be about one U.S. dollar plus postage (which would vary by country). For CDs I'm sure it wouldn't be more than five U.S. dollars but I really don't know. So I'd like everyone to send in a list of what they'd want on a 70 minute recording which we could circulate amongst our selves at a reasonably low cost. (I've already taken note of Mark Wasiel's list - even though it didn't contain "Beatbox".) Then I guess the lists could be "averaged" to create a satisfactory set list - or we could make 2 or 3 or 4 discs. who knows. If anyone would be interested in remixing any AoN tracks drop me a line. For any non-Americans reading this, Stern does a "shock-jock" morning talk show that is syndicated throughout the US and in Canada. In the CDNOW commercial, he said (I'm paraphrasing): "The CDNOW website is great for when you want to buy embarrassing stuff that you wouldn't want to be seen buying in a store, like John Denver's Greatest Hits, or...what was the name of that group that was openly gay?" His co-host suggested Queen, but Stern said, "No, that other one, they did that Relax song." Another staffer in the background said, "Frankie, Frankie Goes to Hollywood." Date: 20 Feb 1998 18:08:47 +0100 (MET) Hello! Inspired by all the many postings about most desired, long overdue, rarity-rereleases from ZTT here on the list, I also want do bring in my ideas about all this. The basic question is of course whether ZTT still owns the copyright to the material in question (especially action series era). So let's assume they do have. In this case the question arises, what's the current release status of the standard repertoire stuff (e.g. Welcome To The Pleasuredome, Daft)?! Wouldn't it be a great opportunity, if the Warner reissues would have to go out of print and vanish from the market? This would offer ZTT the unique chance to bring out some decent rereleases, reprocessing their past. However even in this case there's a small question mark regarding some antique rare mixes: even if they have the rights to it, do they also have the technical requisites to reissue it on CD? I mean, have they preserved the master tapes in good condition? (Some of the 1993 Japanese CD bonus tracks sounded quite poor compared to 80s CD-issues from ZTT.) But let's assume even this is the case. So, everything could be so perfect... Surely, it would mean ZTT had to invest some (financial) effort to get this whole thing going. But I'm sure any distributor would be licking his fingers for stuff like Frankie Goes To Hollywood or Art Of Noise (with even new material in the pipeline). So if all this preconditions are given (technically, legally, marketing), the only decision to make is: WHICH TRACKS TO RERELEASE? Knowing that this is actually a very difficult question, and to make it easier for ZTT, I have here already performed this crucial task for them, including the necessary research! Here's my concept: Release all ZTT albums to a certain point (i.e. all originally released until 1990). Supply all them with bonus tracks (or a whole bonus disc, depending on the amount of essential material piled up) to boost sales! Maybe a marketing strategy would suggest to let the bonus stuff come only with a limited first edition of all the rerelease-CDs - also good. In the following I have listed my idea of what such rereleases could look like. I selected the bonus tracks very carefully, including some very rare and sought after (sometimes promo-only) versions, some only rare on CD yet, some not really that rare but therefore essential mixes, and some B-sides. And there's still left out enough material to keep the collectors proud of their old original records. I compiled all CDs to play around 70 minutes to leave space for some completely unreleased stuff that we all don't know yet. Scroll past this post if you don't want it revealed (but, seriously, it's not anything impressive): I don't think I'm ruining anyone's moviegoing experience by revealing that the line is simply, "Relax, don't do it." Like most of the movie, it is just another '80s reference among many that is not especially clever or funny, but instead conveys nothing more than a pleasant sense of nostalgia. And why "The Wedding Singer"'s closing credits feature a REMAKE of "Video Killed the Radio Star" (by the President of the United States of America) instead of the Buggles version is a mystery, considering that the rest of the soundtrack is all pure-'80s originals. It was kind of jarring to be brought back into the comparatively awful present-day music scene so abruptly at the movie's end... --James Dawson av578@lafn.org # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info ztt" in the message. # Postings must go to ztt@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. # ZTT discography available at http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?ztt ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Ian Peel Subject: Re: (ztt) Release, Do It! Date: 25 Feb 1998 01:17:52 -0800 (PST) Well, I'm sending this message to my fave mailing lists since you might be interested in this. I've had a big response for those Orb cd-rs I'm making and I thought I'd do a whole series of artists also since I know many of you probably would like some of those cool 12" only mixes on cd, or you just don't want to wear out the vinyl. I'm eventually going to put my entire collection on cd so if you want a copy of stuff I have, let me know. The following is a listing of some stuff I was going to put on cdr for some of my fave groups. Let me know if you're interested in any of them (I'll customize them for you if you want.) Each cd-r is $15.00 (for anything you want and that includes shipping). I'm not going to do anything that's still in print since that's just not right, but I figure out of print stuff isn't too bad...If you have different suggestions for what you want, let me know. All 12" remixes are going to be cleaned with Cool Edit Pro and Sound Forge to reduce the noise from the original source. I hope to have the cds sounding better than the originals... All of the remixes come from white labels, promos, deleted or limited singles and stuff. I do have some Dj mixes, let me know if you want em. If you want to forward this to other interested mailing lists, that's okay, but I am trying to keep it low key....=o) Here's a brief listing of the bands you'll find: Check out the following page for synth artists: www.groovemusic.com/synthpop.html Artists featured: Art of Noise, Baby Ford (Rhythm King), Bananarama, Beloved, Boxcar, Brilliant, Gray Clail/Tackhead, Dead Or Alive (Fan the Flame 2, remixes), erasure, Falco, Information Society (Creatures of Influence, remixes), I Start Counting, Jesus loves You, Madonna, Men Without Hats (Interview), New order/Electronic (Until the end of time), Pet Shop boys, Pop Will Eat Itself, Real Life, Re-Flex, Propaganda, Swing Out Sister, Talk Talk, Lost Tracks and One Hit Synth Wonders... Date: 26 Feb 1998 18:15:38 -0800 I don't know if everybody checked this out yet...but it's a MUST DOWNLOAD! All you Horny freaks out there will have your mind blown when you hear it. It's definitely worth the download time. Here's the original message in case you missed it: Last Friday a DJ at Denmarks Radio made a feature on Trevor Horn. This DJ is very fascinated by Trevor and how he was the first to use sampled break beats to make new music. So he told the story about how Trevor used he's inspiration from working with The Supreme Team when he was producing Yes Owner of a Lonely Heart. This is really essential stuff for anyone who is interested in Trevor Horn and how music changed by the use of samplers. That's why I've made a copy of a selected part of the feature for everybody. Check: www.kom.auc.dk/~sorenl/horn.zip (2,5 Mb MP3 sample) Prior to this piece of the feature the DJ has told the story about The Supreme Team and how Trevor Horn had bought this new invention called a Fairlight. In this piece it's shown how Trevor sampled three little pieces (limited by the sampler) of a Funk Inc. record and used it on the Yes track. It's very detailed and I think it's slended. The DJ speaks Danish but I think the music speaks for itself. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info ztt" in the message. # Postings must go to ztt@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. # ZTT discography available at http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?ztt ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Joerg Fitzner Subject: Re: (ztt) Soren's fantastic mp3! And I didn't know this "Funk Inc." track at all! Anyway, for the ones who have heard the excerpt, here's my thoughts, which I already wrote to Soren: I wouldn't nail it all down to Trevor Horn alone. Especially not such details as of who choose which specific sample to place where. I assume that the others of the 'ZTT building team' gave their creative input too. And who knows exactly who had which idea in building "Owner Of A Lonely" exactly like it is? I guess it's more the synergetical power of a great constellation of people. Joerg P.S.: Of course I didn't understand what the presenter was saying, since I don't speak Danish. But I couldn't hear another name but "Trevor Horn", "Trevor Horn", "Trevor Horn" - thus my comment. (And you all know I like Trevor Horn!) # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info ztt" in the message. # Postings must go to ztt@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. # ZTT discography available at http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?ztt ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: david richards Subject: (ztt) Holly Johnson- Questions for! I've just bought second-hand for a few pounds the Mel & Kim album F.L.M. from the mid/late eighties. Incidentally I say mid/late eighties as this was issued without any date on the sleeve or cassette! This album has great characteritic sounds from the Fairlight sequencer and as I'm a PSB fan aswell, maybe you can understand this. What I'm wondering (as I don't have too much background knowledge) is whether this label has (or has had) anything to do with ZTT? I ask this because this (cassette) issue is 'ZCSU2', and I know that the Propaganda 'A Secret Wish' cassette is 'ZCIQ3'...Is there any relationship between the two as I know that usually no two different labels have the same numbering system. Thanks, John.
